Where Old School Meets New School

Throughout art history, many artists, including the masters, would fuse classical techniques with new genres. Picasso, Van Gogh, and Kandinsky were among those who blended classical skills with new ideas and methods, explains art instructor, Alexandra Strauss.

“Today, our ever-changing world of technology and its classroom application expands the possibilities of artistic expression like never before. Foothill’s Digital Photography class affords students an opportunity to learn basic elements of photography using iPads and how to take dynamic photos, using various apps and applied editing techniques,” Ms. Strauss explains.

One innovative approach used in Ms. Strauss’ class explores different styles of photo editing, which even replicate film methods. She shares how this is accomplished: “For instance, Foothill art students take a well exposed portrait in the classroom using window light and white foam boards as background. They then source a highly textured image or take a photo of a textured scene or surface. Using an app called “Union”, they blend the two images together to create stunning portraits that replicate the look of double exposures.”
