Decidedly Academic. Distinctively Christian.
FCS Curriculum Coordinator
How can we best educate our children for success in the 21st Century? The world is changing so fast, that many of the jobs we are preparing our students to fill, currently do not exist. Thus, the current hot topic in education is Common Core State Standards (CCSS)*.
Foothill Christian School was privileged to host a Common Core Summit for local Christian school administrators, curriculum directors, and teachers. The round table discussion was a powerful way for us, as educators, to brainstorm ideas and best practices for the future success of our students. Topics of discussion included ways to implement the standards, applying them in light of our Judeo-Christian values, communicating the standards with parents, and training our teachers in best practices for applying them to lessons. Administrators were enthusiastic about embracing the standards and taking the many collaborative ideas back to their schools for implementation.
Foothill Christian School’s own journey with the Common Core State Standards has been one of excitement and growth. While our existing instructional program meets and exceeds the basic standards, we believe a renewed and organized focus on the standards will increase student achievement. We will use the CCSS to reinforce and strengthen the learning objectives currently outlined in our instructional program. Further, we will identify strategic anchor standards that will enhance student learning and use them to bring a renewed focus to the instructional program.
Foothill Christian School is committed to preparing our students for high school, college, and ultimately to take their place in the workforce. By staying current with trends in education, we believe we are addressing the demands they face today, while preparing them to succeed tomorrow.
*According to the California Department of Education, Common Core State Standards are rigorous, research- and evidence-based, internationally benchmarked standards that prepare students for college and the workforce.
