New Year Resolutions

Happy New Year! What a wonderful expression of hope and optimism we declare every year in January.  The very word January derives its name from Janus, the Roman god of beginnings, usually depicted as having two faces, one looking back, the other while peering ahead.  Reflecting upon last year’s lessons often provides insight for achieving better tomorrows through New Year’s resolutions.

It’s true that a single resolution can positively and profoundly create lasting change in one’s life and help make the world a better place…but only if we can accomplish it.

The key to reaching your goals in 2014 will be your ability to turn intentions into actions. So here are a few timely tips to help guide your path:

#1        Write it Down. This creates clarity about the goal and also keeps you committed. When you write it down, you share a common denominator with the rare 10% of people who actually reach their goals.

#2        Be Realistic.  You can’t change the world overnight. Instead commit to one thing this month and one next month…and guess what – by year’s end you’ll have done 12 new things.

#3        Draw on Feedback and Fun. You must monitor your changes through a filter that supports your efforts and is fun. If you hate the gym, don’t go. Find diets, exercise, financial plans or alternatives that you like. If something is not working for you, alter it or experiment with new approaches until you find one that suits you.

It has been said, “The future is not a gift; it is an achievement.” I should qualify that by saying everyday is indeed a gift that should be treasured, but the point is we actually have the capacity to invent our future.
