Typically, comments like this come from over-zealous, health conscious individuals who advocate for healthier lifestyles for Americans.
Can you blame them?
When you consider that among children ages 2-19, about 1 in 3 are overweight and 1 in 6 are considered obese. These statistics are more frightening when you factor in — overweight adolescents have a 70% chance of becoming overweight adults. Many experts believe that this current generation children will be the first generation in American history to live shorter than their parents, but it doesn’t have to be that way.
Foothill is taking a stand
FCS and Regent Catering have taken up the challenge to offer students a new and improved lunch menu that offers less frozen, more fresh foods … and less fried, more homemade, healthier options. Regent has upgraded the quality of their meats, are making delicious homemade side dishes and offering better balanced meals.
Putting the menu to the test…
I have decided to eat lunch, from the cafeteria, everyday for one whole month. I will blog some of my findings and make recommendations to our families.
Day 1 – Today, I had the Turkey Sub Sandwich. It was very delicious! It had a generous portion of freshly sliced turkey, provolone cheese and the bun was really soft. I added my own lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and mustard to taste. The potato salad side dish was homemade and tasted great. I prefer more chopped pickles in it and sprinkled with a little paprika, but still enjoyed it very much. My Recommendation: A definite winner!
Day 2 – The Grilled Chicken Salad looked like a good option today and it was nice to learn that it is available to the students every day. The full chicken breast was grilled and set atop a large salad that included lettuce, tomatoes, bell peppers, carrots and grated cheese. I also had a side order of fresh watermelon and grapes! My Recommendation: As healthy and tasty as it gets!
Friday is still pizza day which is everyone’s favorite, but I’m really looking forward to the teriyaki chicken and rice bowl on Monday, plus every Tuesday is Taco Tuesday!! Stay tuned.
